                                            Biography

 

Joan Dean is currently working as a political consultant and fundraiser for several
campaigns, including for Congressman John Garamendi of California and New York City Council candidate Debra Cooper. She served as the Finance Director for Congresswoman Carolyn B. Maloney (14 CD, NY) from 2006 – 2008. As the chief fundraiser for a non-competitive Congressional race, she raised over $1.2 million.
 
Prior to these campaigns, she worked as a public affairs and fundraising consultant
in New York and California. She also served in the Administration of Governor Gray
Davis at the California Technology, Trade and Commerce Agency from March 1999
until December 2003 as Acting Undersecretary, Deputy Secretary and Regional
Director. Her responsibilities included overseeing the Agency’s programs and
budget and directing the Division of Science, Technology and Innovation. She was
also appointed as an Ex-Officio Commissioner of the California Coastal Commission
representing the Agency and as a member of the Employment Training Panel.
Dean has enjoyed a most varied and exciting career in government, politics and
fundraising for over thirty years. She also served as Senator Dianne Feinstein's
Deputy State Director in San Diego, and worked for California Lieutenant
Governor Leo McCarthy, assisting him with his field operations and with economic
development projects.
 
Dean held several administrative posts in New York State government at the State
Consumer Protection Board and the Department of Civil Service. She currently
heads her own political consulting and fundraising firm in San Diego and in New
York; her clients have included California Governor Gray Davis, Senators Barbara
Boxer and Dianne Feinstein, Congress members Jane Harman and Steve Israel,
New York Attorney General Candidate Karen Burstein and Steven Spielberg for his
Survivors of the Shoah project.
Dean holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree and a Masters Degree in Public Administration
from the State University of New York at Albany. She served as President of the San
Diego Chapter of the American Jewish Committee and is currently on the Board of
the American Jewish Committee in New York and the National Jewish Democratic
Council, New York Chapter. She is mother of two daughters, Dr. Lisa Cohen, a
physician in Boston, and Amy Cohen, a social worker in New York, and also has five
grandchildren.
